Let’s run away

Maybe you have already heard the term Elopement Wedding, especially more recently when it has gained some popularity; but do you know where this word comes from?

The term Elopement (without the wedding part) originates around 1338 and was used to describe a woman who left her husband to run away with her lover. Yes, exactly as we are telling it.

A few centuries later, the word lost this specific connotation and started to be used to describe couples getting married in secret.

In 1753, the concept evolved close to the meaning it has now as a consequence of the Marriage Act of 1753— in England. According to that law, people under 21 years old needed their parent’s permission to get married. By then, it was a common practice that parents wanted their daughters to marry what they considered a “good candidate”— mainly for economic reasons. The young girl had no say and basically couldn’t do anything to avoid it. Picture something like The Bridgerton, but a century earlier and a lot less glamorous.

If the poor thing was already in love with someone else is normal to think that the best way to be with her real love was running away with him to another place where the law wasn’t that rigid. At that moment, that place was Scotland, so the first Elopement weddings were celebrated in that country.

Even now, Gretna Green, a southern Scottish town on the border with England, is famous as an Elopement Weddings destination, as well as popular and coveted, and it hosts more than 5,000 weddings each year; the town even has a waiting list.

Now in the present, an Elopement Wedding is basically a wedding with just the couple or a small group.

Think about Las Vegas— the couple decided to tie the knot more fluidly in a micro-wedding or a minimalist wedding with all the essentials but without complications.
